Rip Everybody Off

I'll never forget the first day of my TDS (trans disciplinary studies) painting class when one of the professors said to all of us that the best advice he could give us as young artists was, 'steal, steal, steal'.

A few days ago an artist who I greatly admire posted a comment on her facebook page that was very interesting and thought provoking. The topic was in regards to teaching techniques to other artists and what those other artists then do with the techniques. Apparently some don't learn the technique and then use it to create their own work as the classes are intended but rather they copy the techniques step by step, pass them off as their own then turn around and teach them to others for a profit. Of course my first reaction to this was, 'how dare they?' But then I got to thinking about it, and I do think that trying to pass off anothers technique as ones own is dishonest, but I'm not sure that I necessarily think its wrong to re-teach the technique as long as credit is given where it is due.

As you can imagine the topic received tons of comments and there are those who believe that since the teacher was sharing her technique and the student paid to take the class they are free to use it in any way they choose. Others believe that this is absolutely wrong and should never be done and that the offending teacher should be reprimanded in some way (and obviously quite teaching the classes.)

When I worked as a tour guide and relayed information to tourists about the art and history of Florence I certainly didn't site the author of each book I read or professor who lectured on the subject and I was certainly working for profit. I this really any different? Why? How?

Where is the line between copying and being influenced by other artists? And is there really anything wrong with copying in the first place? Is imitation the best form of flattery? Or is it immoral and lacking respect?

I know that I am always looking at other artists and designers for inspiration as well as their handling of space and materials, of course these influences are bond to come out in my work in one way or another. Every artist would like to think of themselves as one of kind and completely original but  influences and the world of imagery that we live in tends to creep in. What is the difference between influence and copycat-ing? And do we as artists have a moral obligation to each other?

Manet clearly copied Titian's Venus of Urbino (above) and the Olympia became one of his most important works. Is it ok to copy as long as its not a contemporary? Is there a statute of limitations?*

I'm interested in what other's opinions are on this subject because I truly have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I understand the frustration of an artist who works hard to create new and interesting work in a field that is difficult to make a living in to begin with,  but is there really anything that hasn't been done before and can we truly claim anything as our own? As artists when we put our work out into the world we essentially give up control of what happens to it from that point forward. Personally, I try not to worry so much about people stealing my ideas and try to concentrate more on the work itself. I also wonder why this is such a touchy subject in the art/handmade world and not so much in the fashion industry? Or is it an issue there too and I just don't know about it?  A trend is generally started by one designer and the the rest follow suite and then there are knock-off's galore!

Let's discuss. What do you think?Where do you stand on the subject? How do you interpret Picasso's quote about stealing? Please comment below.

* I know that there is indeed a statute of limitations when it come to copyright laws, but I'm more interested in artist edict.

Closing Exhibits

Next week will be the last week to see some great exhibits in Florence and like usual I always think I have more time and then find myself trying to catch them all before they're gone! I did get a chance however, to see the Francis Bacon show a few months ago This is a great contemporary art group show at Palazzo Strozzi's Strozzina centere for contemporary culture. I definitely enjoyed this exhibit even though I did find myself trying to no avail to explain to a somewhat angry Italian woman 'why this is considered art'. I guess that means that the show was a success since that is precisely the point. What is art? and who decides? Does beauty define art or vice versa? Definitely worth a visit before it ends on January 27th.

I was a big fan of the work of Annegret Soltau's threaded photographs as well as her threaded web room. Good stuff.

Also at the Palazzo Strozzi is the 1930's: The Arts in Italy Beyond Fascism. I have yet to see this one and hope to get there this weekend. It looks pretty interesting with works from Giorgio de Chirico,  Lucio Fontana, and Giorgio Morandi, just to name a few.

And then there is the amazing Marilyn at the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum . I am slightly confused about this one though since one of the flyers says that it ends January 28th while another shows the date running though April 1. I think I'll try to stop in this week and check it out. I will be sure to report back on this one.

And then of curse since a couple of there shows are coming down there are two new ones that I am looking forward to. The first will take the place of the Fancis Bacon exhibit at the strozzina titled An Idea of Beauty  running from March 29th - July 28th. This show will focus on what beauty means to us today. Sounds great and should be interesting to see after the Marilyn exhibit. I can't wait to check this one out.
And lastly, for now, is Salvador Dali. The incredible and fabulously mad Salvador Dali is coming to Palazzo Medici Riciardi in his own universe as he deserves to be (and how the show will be titled) The Dali Universe will open February 1st.

So as you can see there is plenty going on around town for those of us looking beyond the Renaissance.
Let me know if you've seen any of these exhibits and what you thought of them. Leave a comment below!

Retail Therapy

Yesterday morning as I was scrolling through the news feed on facebook I came a across an article posted by Self Magazine, one of the many health and fitness mags I 'like' on fb, it was titled "Can Shopping Actually Help You Live Longer?" Talk about attention grabbing headlines! Well, obviously I was intrigued, as I'm sure most women on the planet would have been. So I of course quickly clicked on the link to find the answer to this burning question, and even though the article wasn't really about only this subject, but rather other ways to elongate your life, that one little paragraph was enough to convince me! That's all I needed! And since I'm all about being healthy these days, if I can find little ways to fit an extra health benefit or two into my day, hey I'm all for it!  And just for a little added extra support I did a quick Google search to find a bit more evidence of this wonderful news and wouldn't you know it? It's true!! Women's Health Magazine also published an article on the subject a few months back. And who wants to argue with the good doctors at MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Stanford? Not me!

So with that, I strapped on my sandals and grabbed my handbag and I was out the door to reap the benefits! And since I've been working on a new jewelry collection this week and have been feeling a little stressed about finishing and a with a few pieces not working out exactly how I'd planned, I figured this was just what I needed.

So I headed straight for H&M, cheap, cute clothes with the added benefit of the sales. What more could a girl ask for?  Unfortunately, the sale racks have been pretty well picked through so without much luck in that section I headed over to check out the new collection where I immediately fell head over heels in L.O.V.E with this adorable dress.

And even though it was full price, its H&M, and for 40 euro you really can't go wrong. I mean its definitely a transition piece. I can wear it now with my sandals and then in Autumn throw on some tights,  knee high brown boots and a little cardi and I'm good to go. And its a neutral so I can wear it to any event and dress it up or down with the right shoes and accessories.
Oh, wow, it really does work! All of life's worries go slipping away with the right dress in your closet. Oh, and I got a great little belt to go with it and a leopard print pashmina too!

Of course I have always heard the term 'retail therapy' and have used it quite loosely on occasion myself, never necessarily arguing against it, but I also never considered that it it could be truly therapeutic, until today that is.  Or maybe I was simply paying more attention today.

And so my lovelies, here it is, no more feeling guilty, when life is getting you down or your projects aren't going quite as planned, take a little break and go shopping! It's good for your health, the doctor said so! Although, my husband still needs a little more convincing.....

Don't be Shy! Share!
